Relief efforts have been working non-stop to reach all they can, and those efforts just got a little bit of a boost thanks to the New York Jets. The team has given half a million dollars to the Hurricane Sandy relief effort, according to NewYorkJets.com.

According to the NewYorkJets.com article, the $500,000 will go to three different efforts in order to aid three different areas hit hard by last week’s storm. Part will go to The Mayor’s Fund for NYC Hurricane Relief, in order to help New York City. Another part of the money the Jets donated will go to Salvation Army in Nassau and Suffolk Counties, in order to assist storm victims on Long Island. And the remaining funds will go to the Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund.

This is devastation the New York, Long Island and New Jersey area has never seen the likes of from any natural disaster. Moments like this remind us of the way it should be: humanity over sport. As someone who lives on Long Island, I was lucky enough to survive the storm from the safety of my brick dormitory building on Hofstra University’s campus, and have full power, internet and other modern conveniences returned within a few days. However, not all have been so fortunate, and the Jets have nothing but my fullest respect for putting this kind of aid towards the relief effort. It’s been rare this season, but this is one moment I’m truly proud to be a Jets fan.
