Today’s weather forecast for East Rutherford, NJ:  A daytime high of 32 degrees with a nighttime low of 23.  After some snow showers last night, there is a 30% chance of snow this evening with winds from the west coming in at 15 mph.

So what is the significance of my meteorologist analysis?  One year from today will be Super Bowl XLVIII at MetLife Stadium and there are two trains of thought on having a Super Bowl in a cold climate stadium.  Some people, like Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco, think that having a Super Bowl in cold climate is – well, not the best idea.  Then there are other new age thinkers who can see the appeal of a Blizzard Bowl.

No one can be sure on what the weather is going to be a year from today, but we can certainly use our imagination.  If this year’s Super Bowl was at MetLife, the frigid temperature along with the chance of snow would add another storyline to a Super Bowl that is loaded with great stories.

Think of some of the things we would see if this year’s Super Bowl was in the cold.  Ray Lewis would be playing his final NFL game in the frigid cold, of course wearing no sleeves and dishing out demolishing hits in the cold just one last time.  You would be able to see Colin Kaepernick’s breath every time he decided to break a 25 yard run and scramble around the picket.

Seeing how the two brothers, head coaches Jim and John Harbaugh, bear the cold would not quite be Tom Coughlin’s cold face, but the emotion that both these guys have on the sideline would certainly make for some good cold faces.

But since Super Bowl XLVIII is still a year away, we can only speculate on what will unfold.  Maybe we will get another sibling Super Bowl like this year’s but maybe two different siblings.  It is very possible we could see a Manning Brother Bowl in 2014.  The Broncos and the Giants would bring in the highest ratings for a Super Bowl especially after this year’s HarBowl.

If Peyton and Eli were to meet in next year’s Super Bowl the battle of the two brothers would be even bigger than this year’s game.  Big brother Peyton going for his second Super Bowl title to catch little brother Eli in titles won.  With a Giants win in another Super Bowl, Eli would solidify himself as an all-time great and one of only five quarterbacks with at least three Super Bowl rings.  If Eli could pull off a Super Bowl win in front of his home crowd it would only add to the dramatics.

Or maybe we could see a repeat of this year’s Super Bowl.  It is extremely unlikely for one team to return to the Super Bowl let alone two, but we can surely use our imagination here.  A rematch of this year’s Super Bowl, which is already expected to be one of the better championship games in history, would be great.  One brother would be going for revenge on the other brother and one quarterback looking for that first win while the other goes for that elusive second championship.  You can never go wrong with a rematch and it gets people thinking about a possible third matchup.

How about this scenario?  The Jets getting to play at home in their second Super Bowl in franchise history.

Unfortunately at this point, we have a better chance of the Earth’s rotation stopping and the next ice age beginning before the Jets make the Super Bowl; so let’s forget that scenario.

The point is, there is a lot to be had with the Super Bowl in the New York area.  New York City is the biggest city in the world and no one can throw a Super Bowl party like NYC (with the exception being maybe this year’s host New Orleans).  Yes, it might be freezing cold at this time next year but that does not mean that it will be a bad game.  Some snow and the right opponents could make next year’s Super Bowl one of the best in history.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves.  In just a few short hours, there is going to be a great Super Bowl played with some of the best storylines in the NFL today unfolding.  Let’s enjoy this one first and then think about the endless possibilities for Super Bowl XLVIII.
