After the New York Knicks were ousted by the Indiana Pacers in the playoffs, much blame fell on the head of center Tyson Chandler, who was outplayed by Pacers center Roy Hibbert for the majority of the series. Chandler was recently asked if he felt he had let his team down, to which Chandler responded to the contrary:

“No, no. You can’t let the team down if you give them 100 percent. I gave my teammates everything I had and I’m fine with that.”

It seems like an appropriate response from Chandler, who is basically defending his effort, but given his pitiful performance, you’d be hard-pressed to find somebody that agrees with his assessment of the situation. Chandler’s lackluster performance, along with Hibbert’s play, are the primary reason for the Pacers advancing over the Knicks. Now, the Pacers have a tough task against the defending champion Miami Heat, which some online sportsbooks will give you good odds if you are a Pacers believer.

Either way, it will be interesting to see if Chandler is even on this Knicks roster, as many fans are yearning for change, and he may be the logical piece to move, unless a coaching change may suffice with the Knicks faithful.

The Knicks were able to win game five at home, they were facing elimination and obviously were not looking to be knocked out in New York. Still its a small victory because the obvious real test is the next game. A game six that has the Pacers, with a chance to avoid a very dangerous game seven for them, eliminate the Knicks from the playoffs. The Pacers will come with more intensity in the next game, and they won’t give the Knicks an easy time anywhere on the court. The physicality of this team just has the Knicks looking out of it at sometimes.

Although in this game five there was two things that were different from the rest of the series. One of them was the fact that George Hill, the starting point guard for the Pacers, didn’t play. He had been killing the Knicks in the other games, Indiana didn’t really look the same on offense without him. Another thing that was different was the fact that Chris Copeland saw about twenty very productive minutes and impacted the offense positively because of it. Copeland is probably the best at creating his own shot after J.R. Smith and Carmelo Anthony, doesn’t that make him one of their best offensive players? Still he’s barely played in the series till this point.

I think the Knicks haven’t got it this year. They simply have too many flaws, the inconsistency of Carmelo and J.R. Smith, the lack of great rebounders, and the toughness that just doesn’t quite cut it against tough teams. I can see them playing good in the game throughout but I don’t see them winning it. The Knicks don’t have odds in their favor, George Hill will play in the game. Hopefully I’m wrong but something tells me the Knicks season will end tonight.

The end is near for the Knicks. With game five approaching, the Knicks are on the brink of being eliminated in what will be a disappointing end for the second ranked team in the East.

Many thought this was the year for New York. However, Syracuse coaching legend Jim Boeheim thinks that the Knicks need to make roster changes no matter how their season ends.

Boeheim has watched almost every game this year and although Carmelo Anthony was able to put his Syracuse team on his shoulders and carry them to an NCAA Championship in 2003, he thinks this team needs more help than just Anthony.

“I think they’re gonna have to do something down the road to change the roster,” Boeheim said Thursday. “I’m sure there will be a lot of changes for next year. They have a lot of guys that I’m sure are not going to be back. And how they fit guys in and replace those guys is gonna be key I think.”

Boeheim, who knows a thing or two about winning games, thinks that the Knicks need three guys to score in order for them to be victorious. That being said, the problem to Boeheim would seem to be depth on the roster.

The Knicks are just one loss away from ending their season much sooner than many thought. PHOTO COURTESY: USA TODAY SPORTS VIA BLEACHER REPORT

“The bottom line for them is to win is they have to get three guys to score, Carmelo [Anthony], [Raymond] Felton and J.R. Smith,” he said. “Those three guys have to score from what I’ve seen this year. When those guys score, they win. When one or two of those guys struggle, it’s difficult for them to win. That’s really the bottom line.”

One of the biggest issues moving forward for the Knicks is that they were built to win this year; and the age of many of their players proves that. Signing guys who were clearly past their prime such as Jason Kidd, Marcus Camby and Kurt Thomas was the team’s attempt to squeeze one or two more years out of solid veterans to win now.

Unfortunately it hasn’t really worked for them (Kidd has gone eight straight games without a point, Camby sits at the end of the bench and Thomas is now a distant memory).

With elimination looming, fans may start thinking about the future sooner than they expected; and Boeheim knows that would be crushing for a fan base that is starving for a championship.

“I’m sure they’re going to be disappointed [if they lose],” Boeheim said. “It’s one of those, you wanna be better, you wanna go further and sometimes it doesn’t work.”

The same story keeps coming up for the Knicks. They can’t match up to the physicality and defensive minded play of the Indiana Pacers. If they had a strategy to combat what the Pacers have been doing to them then maybe they would have won at least one of these games. But instead they played a game that was almost a mirror image of the one before it and put themselves up against the wall by doing so.

They now are down three games to one and face elimination thursday night at home. They might win that game but winning the series looks pretty bleak. Its simply the same story for the Knicks, they are not competing well against all the defense Indiana is throwing at them. Carmelo looks kind of frustrated being guarded by guys like David West and Paul George. J.R. Smith continues to slump and effectively shoot the Knicks out of the playoffs. He had another abysmal performance in this game, shooting twenty two shots and only making seven of them.

They also seem to have a significant trouble lately stopping George Hill. He was the high scorer for the Pacers in this game and shot very well for the game going nine of fourteen. Hill has started to really give them trouble along with the play of Roy Hibbert. He has been abusing Chandler in this series snatching offensive boards all over the place and making post shots. Between Hill and Hibbert, who aren’t known as their best players, the Knicks have their hands full. It wouldn’t be so bold as to say they could lose the next game and be eliminated at home. That sure would be a disappointing end to what once looked like a pretty promising season.

This is exactly what I was afraid of before the series began. The Knicks inability to rebound effectively and keep their heads in the game when being pushed around physically have caused them to now lose two of the three games played in the series. They face a very crucial game four coming up in Indiana, should they lose they will be one game away from elimination. Now their dealing with injuries, Shumpert has knee soreness, things are not getting any easier for the Knicks. The main problem in this game and the series overall seems to be the rebounding.

Too many times a shot went up for Indiana and they were able to corral the miss leading to a second shot attempt. Also the defense of the Pacers was just smothering the Knicks, they only had one player score in double figures. Just generally speaking they had trouble running the offense the whole game. Indiana has found the winning formula for playing the Knicks, it includes tough physical defense and strong rebounding. The Knicks need to find a formula to beat that because its what the Pacers are going to continue doing until it stops working. What the Knicks can focus on is getting back to that fast paced, ball moving, open shot creating offense they had working for them earlier on in the Celtics series. The scoring has been too dependent on a select few, Carmelo hasn’t exactly been playing MVP basketball and J.R. Smith seems kind of lost right now.

If Carmelo had been playing amazingly then you wouldn’t be able to look at the inefficient scoring and blame him, but he has been shooting poorly in many of these games. The shots he takes are sometimes wasted possessions that take looks away from other people who could be getting much better shots. Overall the three things they need to improve to win this series is: the rebounding effectiveness on their side of the glass, the ability to stay in their game offensively when they face that tough smothering defense and spreading the floor well and finding the open man for the best shot.

They called up funky throwing Greg Burke after sending Jeurys Familia to the DL in an effort to give the bullpen some relief; which is nice for about a game or so. They have been hoping that last year’s closer Frank Francisco could come back and eat some innings for them, but that appears to not be happening anytime soon.

Setback for Frank Francisco. He will see the doctor this week regarding his elbow.

Not much has been released about the setback yet but if he has to see a doctor this week, you know that can’t be good.

So what does this mean for the Mets? They can start by getting another gem from Harvey today as the Mets finish their series with the Pirates. But after that, what is their next move?

Another option could be bringing up Zack Wheeler earlier than they would like and relegating one of their current starters to the bullpen. There are plenty of starters that have been bad enough and worthy of a demotion to the pen, but that is a scenario the Mets want to avoid.

It’s a tough task for Collins but we all know what he will be praying for today: Another perfect game bid from their stud Harvey today.

You never hear about Mariano Rivera having issues with his teammates. The happy-go-lucky closer is one of the game’s all-time greats, and is one of the most respected players in the entire league.

The guy is still allowed to wear Jackie Robinson’s 42 for cryin’ out loud; so you know there’s respect there.

Joba Chamberlain doesn’t seem to care about that.

Before Saturday’s 3-2 win over the Royals, Mo and Joba got into a tiff right in front of reporters after Rivera told Chamberlain to be quiet so he could conduct an interview. Chamberlain, who was signing autographs and talking to family, told Rivera “Don’t ever shush me again,” according to the New York Daily News.

Many who were present felt Chamberlain was the one who was out of line; and does that really surprise anyone? Frank Isola of the New York Daily News was one of those reporters:

Mariano got into it with Joba in the Yankees dugout? Wow. Lets see, whose side do you take, a guy who is all class or a class A knucklehead.

— Frank Isola (@FisolaNYDN) May 12, 2013

It was confirmed after the game that the two had not spoken about the incident, but now one must wonder: Is trouble brewing in the Bronx?

When asked about the incident, Chamberlain was short with reporters saying “I’m not talking about it” and reiterating that it was “between me and Mo.”

Rivera showed his maturity when speaking about the situation saying “We’re grownups…We’ll take care of that.”

Now we’ll just have to wait and see just how this situation gets taken care of.

But a fan attending game three of the Knicks/Pacers series made it abundantly clear about how he felt about New York. Well, the Knicks at least. This picture, snapped by Howard Beck of the New York Times shows this Indiana fan holding up a sign that stands as symbolism for how the Hoosier State feels about the Knicks.

The Knicks sure needed this game. There was simply no way they were going to win this series had they gone down two to nothing going back into Indiana. So after being severely taken out of their game and beaten in the opening game the Knicks responded nicely to win the second game at home. They had been pushed around by the Pacers in the previous game so they had to do some pushing in this one. They needed to make this game their kind of game to play. They needed to control the pace, because Indiana thrives on teams not playing their game.

The Knicks game is definitely one built around them controlling things because they almost need more possessions than the other team to make up for all the shots Carmelo Anthony takes. The team goes as he goes and in this one he shot pretty well. When he is on point the Knicks are very hard to beat. They need him to get back into a groove that the Celtics took him out of because J.R. Smith seems to have lost his shot. Smith is a player that has been very inconsistent throughout his career and it’s really showing now. As the season ended he played very highly and won himself a sixth man of the year award. Now he is showing why the Nuggets were quick to not want him back. The Knicks need to be more consistent overall, that was and continues to be their biggest problem. It even showed a little in this game that they won so easily.

They were up with a lead and then they let the Pacers get back into the game and even take a two point lead in the third. The Knicks then responded by going on a thirty to two run to put the game away. That’s something they will not be able to do on the road so they need to be able to hold onto leads they gain. That all comes from consistency, if they do not play consistent in Indiana then they will lose both games and be in a bad spot.

Believe it or not, the Jets released someone else besides Tim Tebow last week.

You might not have even known it, but former Oregon Duck Cliff Harris was with the Jets; albeit briefly. He was signed on Jan. 4 of this year and was released on April 30, and since then, he has been in the news for all the wrong reasons.

Rich Cimini of ESPN tweeted the news that Harris had been arrested for the third time in nine days. It is unclear if Harris will see any jail time for the series of arrests.

Ex-Jet Cliff Harris arrested 3rd time/9 days. This time for failure to appear in court re: 2nd arrest. Stopped for speeding on way to court.

— Rich Cimini (@RichCimini) May 8, 2013

Gregg Rosenthal of NFL.com had more information than Cimini’s tweet. The Jets cut Harris after he was arrested in New Jersey for possession of marijuana. He then got into a domestic altercation with his girlfriend in Oregon on Friday night outside of a Buffalo Wild Wings.

The third (and for Harris’ sake, hopefully the last) came when Harris failed to show up for a court appearance. The kicker; Harris was pulled over for speeding on the way to court because he was running late.

Harris was entering his second year as an undrafted free agent that was initially signed by the Eagles in 2012. The good news for Harris is this: the latest arrest will likely give him all the time in the world to get high and speed, since he won’t be getting a job in the NFL.

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie may be an SNL mainstay, but his latest move is certainly no joke.

In an attempt to get healthier, and possibly gain a competitive edge in his political career, Christie has decided to get lap-band surgery. The self-proclaimed “healthiest fat guy you’ve ever seen” says he had the surgery to make sure he is there for his family in the future.

To get a better feel of the procedure, Dennis Waszak Jr. of the Associated Press reported that Jets head coach Rex Ryan urged the governor to have the procedure. Ryan had the surgery roughly three years ago.

During a recent phone conversation, #Jets coach Rex Ryan urged NJ Gov. Chris Christie to have Lap-Band apne.ws/15o9cUf (from @ap)

— Dennis Waszak Jr. (@DWAZ73) May 7, 2013

Ryan has had high praise for the surgery and attributes it to him dropping over 100 lbs since. Ryan was 348 lbs before he had the surgery following his second year with the Jets.

“It basically teaches you how to eat like a human,” Ryan said according to the Associated Press. “The Lap-Band goes: ‘No, no. You’re only going to eat this or that,’ and it trains your body how to eat right.”

Christie again reiterated that this had nothing to do with politics, but many believe he will run for president in the future. One of the main criticisms of Christie has been his weight, as he has gotten progressively more popular since Hurricane Sandy ravaged the area.

President William Taft was once rumored to be so large that he couldn’t fit into the White House bathtub during his tenure. More recently, Bill Clinton was open about his weight issues but he was half the man that Christie is; literally.

Chris Christie (left, if you couldn’t tell) and his wife Mary Pat hope that his lap-band surgery will make the “healthiest fat guy” even healthier. PHOTO COURTESY: LESLIE BARBARO/ASSOCIATED PRESS

The New Jersey governor has often spoke candidly about his weight. He’s also made several “Twinkie” jokes and has often been a good sport when someone jokes about it.

If Christie does run for president one day and gets elected, maybe he can give Ryan a place in his cabinet.

It would be unclear how he would be as a politician, but one thing we know for sure: he would be tough on defense.

These Knicks will have trouble here. It was clearly evident in this first game and should continue to show throughout the rest of the series. The Indiana Pacers are younger and more physical than the Knicks, that causes a lot of problems for them. They will have trouble getting to the hoop because Indiana carries the tallest starting center in the game. They will have trouble rebounding because Indiana is a terrific rebounding team. And they will have trouble scoring in general because the Pacers are one of the better, if not the best, defensive teams in the NBA.

The Knicks will have trouble with the Pacers and if they play many more games like this one than they will not make it to the Eastern Conference Finals. Perhaps one of the things the Knicks can immediately concentrate on is rebounding. Granted there are other areas that need improvement for them, the rebounding seemed to hurt them a decent amount in this game. The Pacers were able to get second shot attempts which allowed them to score more efficiently. In this series which should be very defensive, the Knicks need to grab every miss off of their own basket so they don’t allow Indiana to gain extra shot attempts.

The Knicks also need to find a way to keep their composure when things get very physical. Usually when things get physical the Knicks tend to take bad shots, rush possessions and bail out the other team with stupid fouls. That loss of composure is exactly what Indiana thrives on, they have been doing it all year to opposing teams. The Knicks could be in danger of getting swept if they don’t have their composure under control because all of the other things they are doing wrong definitely stems from that part of their game. They have to remain consistent, its something they’ve had a problem with all year long and even in the most recent series. But only consistent good play will get them past a younger more physical team, because that has to be their advantage in this series not their disadvantage.

The Knicks were able to win the sixth game and end the Celtics run this postseason. Its something the Knicks have had troubling doing because they hadn’t done so in over ten years. Its a step they needed to take, a milestone that needed to be achieved, a stepping stone that needed to be reached. The Knicks needed to take this next step into the playoffs. They had probably thought things would be simple because they had won the first three games. And it almost was if not for some elbowing antics.

The Celtics won game four and came into New York to win a game five also. The Knicks had to close this out in six because they would have lost had it gone seven. Even though it ended with this game, the Knicks still did a lot of things wrong. The biggest problem in this game was playing with the lead. They were up big going into the half and let the Celtics make a little run to gain some momentum. The Knicks worked hard to gain another sizable lead going into the fourth and even got it to a full twenty-six points. So that should have been the game right? Well the Celtics did go on a twenty to nothing run to make it scary close. Again the Knicks weren’t playing well with the lead. Even though they got the win, there was a lot of stupid shots that allowed the Celtics to make it a close game. The Celtics would simply not die, they had a lot of fight in them.

The Knicks need to take this for what this is: an ok played series by them. They won but there was a lot of things they could have done better. If they don’t correct these things then they will not make it past the next round. Matching up against the Indiana Pacers is tough because they are not nearly as old as the Celtics. They play a similar style of physical basketball and it has shown at points this season to take the Knicks out of their game. The Knicks will have to play more consistent in order to make it through this next round.

The Tim Tebow saga is finished with the Jets. He has now played for two NFL teams and it doesn’t appear as if his ride is stopping there. He is obviously looking to still be an NFL quarterback and I won’t be surprised when a team probably will give him sort of a shot. He might even end up in the same position he was in with the Jets, a situation in which he wasn’t ever meant to succeed. It was like they gave Tim Tebow a test he didn’t study for. In fact he didn’t just not study, its as if he was never even in the class the whole time. There are three main reasons why Tim Tebow was not going to succeed with the Jets.

#1. The Lack of a Truly Supporting Offensive Cast

The Jets did something that really made me think that they would be having some problems on offense this past year. Rather it was something they didn’t do and that was re-sign Plaxico Burress. Burress had a terrific season for the Jets in the previous year and its not like they were exactly flush with wide-recievers when they had him. He had three touchdowns in one game during that year and was a nice addition to their passing game when there. When they decided not to bring back a pretty productive receiver, I knew the passing game would hurt because of it.

It didn’t help that Santonio Holmes was injured but that showed them how much more the Jets needed to hold onto all of the quality receivers they had. Although I’m pretty sure Holmes wouldn’t have helped Tebow that much had he been healthy, he is not a true number one reciever. Look at his numbers the year earlier when he played all sixteen games, he was tied for the team lead in touchdowns and only second on the team in receiving yards. Seems like a number two receiver to me, and Tim Tebow was without him. Also it wasn’t just the lack of talent playing against him.

#2 The Law of Averages

It was a simple numbers game, Tim Tebow was playing against math. And if you’ve ever been through school, you know not to mess with math. Math always wins. Basically speaking it was averages that Tim Tebow was playing against. In the past 36 years, since the Jets last had Joe Namath, they have been through 25 different starting quarterbacks. 25 QBs in only 36 years! Thats an average a new quarterback every 1.44 years. Tim Tebow was just a little behind only lasting a year and all. But still he did better and lasted longer than some other Jets quarterbacks. Tim Tebow was playing against the Jets law of averages, something the likes of guys such as Chad Pennington and Vinny Testaverde were able to outlast. And I’m pretty sure everybody remembers how average they were. Tim Tebow may not even be considered an average quarterback. Heck hall of famer Warren Moon said he wouldn’t succeed at QB in the CFL.

Via the Chicago Tribune website

“They throw the ball a lot. It’s only three downs, so the passing game is much more important up there, and there’s a lot more field to cover. If you can’t throw the football, it doesn’t matter where you play quarterback. You have to be able to throw it. That’s his biggest problem, just being able to complete passes, be an accurate passer.”

Thats the Canadian Football League, which basically serves like the same purpose as the AFL, as a D-league for the NFL. But Tim Tebow was doomed to fail mainly because his role with the Jets was always mismanaged.

#3 He Never and Wasn’t Ever Planned to Start a Game

This is probably the biggest reason why he was not going to succeed here. The Jets never started him at quarterback. They never gave him the reigns, they never let him run the show and as a result they never truly let Tim Tebow be Tim Tebow. Tim Tebow isn’t really a quarterback but he’s a leader. He doesn’t have the greatest ability but he’s shown he can win some games at the starting position. Now I’m not saying Tim Tebow would have succeeded had he started but the Jets never will know nor did they ever bother to find out because they never started him. It might have just been a big ploy to push Sanchez to succeed because from the very start they made it clear that they never really planned to start him.

Via the New York Times website

“We’re going to do a lot of great things with him, and every quarterback in the N.F.L. has a backup. We just changed who ours is and we feel really good about it. We have a vision for the player, we have a role for the player.” Former Jets GM, Mike Tannenbaum.

Obviously he didn’t have a vision for his future as the Jets general manager of operations because bringing in Tim Tebow was a high risk, low to moderate reward situation. They were going to use him the way they had used Brad Smith. And as a bonus he would supposed to push Mark Sanchez to get better. This was the wrong guy for both of those things. He is not the same kind of athlete as Brad Smith, theres a chance that Brad Smith has better quarterback abilities than Tebow.

Tim Tebow also wasn’t going to push Sanchez to get better by competing with him for the top QB spot. His skill set was too lacking for that, he was however going to bring a lot more unneeded attention to Sanchez’s failures as he developed. Every time Sanchez missed a throw people were going “well why isn’t Tim Tebow in there” Every time Sanchez threw an interception people were going”well why isn’t Tim Tebow in there?” Every time something like this happened

Why isn’t Tim Tebow in there? (to do possibly something worse)

Tim Tebow should have been given a chance to start a game, to see actually what he could have done in the spotlight. The season became pretty much a wash at one point, the Jets then realized their mistake by bringing him in and then they simply could not start him. What if he did good and actually won some games? They would be inclined to keep him and were simply not looking to do that. Once they found out that their gamble on him being the simultaneous replacement for a savvy older veteran quarterback and Brad Smith wasn’t working out they were not going to keep him around.

This is getting a little ridiculous. After winning the first three games against the Celtics in this series, one of them in Boston, the Knicks have now lost the next two games. Effectively they have let the Celtics back into the series. The bottom line is that when you have a team on the ropes you finish them quickly because if they start gaining momentum things could get bad. Let a team that has no place beating you hang around and all of the sudden they start to get it in their heads that they actually can beat you. All of the sudden their play starts reflecting how they’re thinking and before you know it they are in the series again.

This is exactly what has happened to the Knicks. It all really started with the J.R. Smith elbow which caused him to miss a game. It transferred all of the momentum onto Boston’s side because they were able to win game four and now the Celtics are rolling. They came out and played a very physical game which took the Knicks out of their concentration overall. The Knicks were not playing the same kind of defense they had been playing earlier in the series. Over and over again the Celtics were left with wide open shots which they were able to knock down again and again. This lack of stopping power really hurt the Knicks because they were fighting to get back into it and couldn’t keep the Celtics from scoring. If they want to close this out they are going to have to get back to that tough physical infallible defense they have built their game-plan around.

Also Carmelo Anthony has played pretty badly in the last two games. He couldn’t really buy a bucket in this one, the Celtics were triple teaming him at times. J.R. Smith returned but shot bricks all night, the Knicks just couldn’t do anything right. The Celtics have found a formula for playing with these Knicks, it was bound to happen. The Knicks haven’t really found an answer to that physical style of play the Celtics are imploring, their going to need one if they want to win this series. One things for sure, they better put the series away in Boston on Friday…
